Well, here is a rather different rum. Bumbu has great shelf appeal with a bottle and oversized cork which have as much to do with swashbuckling pirates and Errol Flynn as contemporary drinks marketing. The black glass is embossed with the company name, and a metal ‘X’ flies like a pirate’s insignia right in the middle. A map of the Caribbean decorates the back.
The traditional rum from Panama isn’t like the usual Caribbean suspects. Bumbu Rum XO is produced in a distillery which has been around for 120 years. Sugar cane is processed into black and sticky molasses, which is then distilled. The resulting rum spends 18 years in old bourbon barrels made of American white oak. It is finished in sherry barrels to add a well-rounded complexity. This is a sipping rum for true lovers of this historic spirit.
Notes:
Appearance: clear amber
Nose: brown sugar, toffee, with a hint of vanilla from the barrel
Palate: coffee, vanilla, citrus, toffee
Finish: medium long and warming
Alcohol strength: 40% abv.
Bumbu Rum XO is a delightful and mature spirit of character. A wonderful gift for any rum sipper.
