Wahaca Wimbledon
Sizzling Mexican Summer.
Yes, Mexican food is a favourite, and to such an extent that I visit every year to learn more about that country and its food and drink. Wahaca is a chain of restaurants and offers some of the best value and fun dining on the high street, or in this case The Broadway – Wimbledon Broadway. The restaurant is right next door to the local cinema and close to Wimbledon station and Wimbledon Village.
Driving here? There’s plenty of parking nearby, including Wimbledon Bridge car park just a few minutes’ walk away.
This is a cosy restaurant sporting the signature Wahaca nods to Mexican decor with splashes of vibrant colours on the walls. It was warm and inviting on such a cold and very wet London day. It’s summer so what do you expect!
The menu offers something for every taste and appetite. There are options for vegetarians who won’t feel short-changed, and the drinks offerings draw on the spirits of Mexico – but there are some delicious mocktails too.
We started with a brace of cocktails. I ordered a Paloma: it’s a classic Mexican cocktail but less well-known than the Margarita. It’s a long drink made with tequila, pink grapefruit and topped with soda. In Mexico it is made with grapefruit soda but that isn’t always easy to find in the UK.
Marmalade Mezcalita was my guest’s choice. This one packs a delicious punch and it’s addictive, made with Quiquiriqui Matatlan mezcal. Matatlan is the centre of mezcal production in Mexico. This mezcalita is made with the ubiquitous lime and a house-made guajillo chilli marmalade syrup. It’s sweet and has plenty of that mezcal smoke, with a hint of spice on the finish.
Butter Bean and Confit Garlic Dip was our first starter plate. Creamy butter beans, crispy chickpeas and confit garlic was topped with Trealy Farm sobrasada chorizo and served with tortilla chips. I have had this before and it truly is a comforting plate. You can order this without the chorizo and it’s still a winner.
House Nachos with Chorizo was our second plate and it was quite the spread! Trealy Farm chorizo, black beans, crema, guacamole, pink pickled onions, queso cheese sauce, fresh tomato salsa and jalapeño were presented on a large platter. Every chip was laden with those flavourful fixin’s so there were no dry and nude crackers left on the plate. Nachos make the perfect sharing platter and it’s done well at Wahaca.
Grilled Ajillo Chicken Club was my main dish and I can recommend this. It was a quesadilla stuffed with chicken and cheese, and it was drippingly moreish. Silverware is provided but hands and several paper napkins worked just as well, and somehow enhanced the fun of that tasty dining experience. That alone would have made a delightful light lunch.
Sunshine Bowls are great value and constitute a full meal. They are colourful, healthy and filling and the Halloumi Al Pastor vegetarian version was my guest’s choice from the selection. The preparation was a vibrant bowl of 30 plants, with avocado, corn and bean salsa, cherry tomatoes, quinoa, rocket and agave chipotle dressing, and in this case topped with that hearty cheese. It’s vegetarian but any meat eater would enjoy the balanced textures and flavours of this plate. If that is a culinary step too far then there is a chicken Sunshine Bowl; and vegans will be happy with the Garlic Sweet Potato Sunshine Bowl which does sound tempting.
Wahaca Wimbledon is a convivial spot for great value food in a central location with good transport access. Its menu is exciting and the seasonal specials will ensure something new at every visit.
