The choice for holidays.
South Africa is well-known for its quality Merlot. Originally native to Bordeaux, France, Merlot has been cultivated for 500 years or so and is now one of the most popular grape varieties. Steenberg Farm has a delicious expression of this.
Steenberg Farm was established in 1682. One might expect the first owner of such an illustrious property to be a wealthy chap named Meneer Steenberg, but nothing could be further from the truth. Catharina Ras was the first owner of Steenberg. She was a young pioneer in an era when women had no legal rights and were very much subservient to men.
The Estate has changed hands down the centuries. Graham Beck bought Steenberg Hotel and Steenberg Winery in April 2005. Steenberg Hotel is now a luxury destination, with two fine restaurants, an award-winning winery, a championship 18-hole golf course, private homes and a world-class spa set amongst the estate’s astounding natural landscape.
Steenberg Merlot 2021
Their 2021 Merlot is a classic expression of the grape, which is a versatile choice for holiday food pairing. It offers red summer berries and damsons to the fore. There is spice, fruit and cedar from the barrels. With 18 months in French oak, this wine has plenty of pleasing complexity, clean acidity and balanced tannins. This full-bodied wine will stand up to meats with rich sauces, game pies and robust casseroles, and your cheeseboard.
Steenberg Merlot 2021 is best enjoyed at a temperate of 15 – 18°C. Open a while before pouring to allow the wine to breathe. It can be put down for five to seven years after bottling, thus making a thoughtful host/hostess gift.
