Spring with Bettys

Savoury Hot Cross Bun.

Rarebit Hot Cross BunIt’s almost Spring – although the crocuses think it’s already arrived. Easter eggs are found in profusion and it’s also hot cross bun season, and Bettys of York have both traditional and innovative versions. But who was Betty?

In 1907 a young Swiss baker and confectioner, Fritz Bützer, travelled to England with a dream of setting up his own business. He eventually settled in the spa town of Harrogate, by which time he’d changed his name to Frederick Belmont and described himself as a ‘Chocolate Specialist’. It was in Harrogate that Frederick fell in love with and later married his landlady’s daughter, Claire Appleton. In July 1919, with the financial support of Claire’s family, the first Bettys opened for business…. But strangely nobody seems to know who the eponymous Betty was!

A new savoury version

Hot Cross Buns are historically enjoyed every Good Friday in Christian communities. They are symbolic of this significant day, marking the end of the season of Lent with the cross referencing the crucifixion. These days they are eaten by everybody just because they are delicious. Bettys offers a new savoury version which will appeal to those who want a break from sweet treats.

Bettys Large Yorkshire Rarebit Hot Cross Bun looks like an Italian panettone, but the rarebit concept is British. The ingredients mirror that international marriage by using both Cheddar and Parmesan cheeses! The savoury bread is deliciously versatile, being a novel addition to a Full English or as part of a Ploughman’s Lunch.

This cheesy bread is soft and makes lovely toast. The flavours are well-balanced and pleasingly complex. Try a bite with just some butter and a little flavourful chutney. Some of the best things in life are simple!

Bettys Large Yorkshire Rarebit Hot Cross Bun makes a great gift; and do have a look at the Bettys of York online shop.
