I found myself drawn to this rum even before the first sip. Who can resist the humour, the sheer fun of a Pirate’s Grog Spiced Rum? Avast me hearties! (translation: Stop, dear chaps) is emblazoned on the back label, begging the reader to learn more about this award-winning spirit.
This rum was conceived in the jungle of Roatán 40 miles off the coast of Honduras. Pirates and buccaneers used the island for R&R between fights and plundering. Two visitors from England, Gareth and Beth, discovered a spirit which inspired them to make their own, with the support of ‘The Dutch Pirate’, Robert J. van der Weg.
Pirate’s Grog Spiced Rum is a delicious tapestry of salt, caramel, allspice and more from the region around Roatán. Its base is a well-crafted five-year-aged rum offering depth and richness. Its maturation takes place in American oak and bourbon barrels which add both character and flavour. The rum is then blended in small batches.
