Penrhos Wonky Strawberry Gin
Nothing out of Shape Here!
It was a new one to me, but Penrhos Wonky Strawberry Gin has been a delicious discovery. It’s the result of the mission of two families, and two very cute distillery dogs, with a passion for fruit and distilling.
There is a family farm in Herefordshire producing wonderful fruit. But as every gardener knows, fruit doesn’t always conform to the demanded supermarket shape. So, what to do with all those tasty yet wonky fruits? Make gin!
Penrhos distil their handcrafted spirits in an old calf shed using a copper still called ‘Connie’, and it’s then bottled in recycled aluminium bottles. Which can be used or recycled over and over again!
Reduce the packaging’s carbon footprint
In 2023 Penrhos became the first distillery to move its bottles from traditional glass to 100% recycled aluminium. This change helped to reduce the packaging’s carbon footprint by a creditable 91%. The melting point of glass is over 1000 degrees more than aluminium, meaning recycling glass requires a huge amount of energy. This practical move has won the company many awards for innovation, sustainability and packaging.
So, you feel noble. You have purchased a very attractive bottle. But what of the gin within? Penrhos Wonky Strawberry Gin will be the go-to gift for any strawberry lover this summer. One sip will waft the lucky drinker to a summer afternoon at Wimbledon or to the shade of an English garden.
Serve Penrhos Wonky Strawberry Gin well chilled over ice, with some sparkling water and perhaps a muddle of ripe strawberries. Yes, this gin really does taste of those luscious berries.
