Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin from ALDI

Oliver Cromwell ginIs this getting monotonous? I keep saying ‘ALDI has done it again!’ and ‘Another winner from ALDI’. But they do seem to have the edge when it comes to quality spirits at an attractive price. Here we have Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin from the ALDI shelves and it doesn’t disappoint.

The bottle is flat-sided and traditional. The green glass is somewhat predictable and reminiscent of other gins. The white label offers a London skyline as well as an IWSC Gold 2017 logo giving the hint that this gin is worthy of a taste – and it is!

Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin hits all the classic notes and will make the perfect summer G&T. It is a solid gin rather than being over-crafted and too complex. Just a sip will have one’s mouth watering and summon visions of a hot summer day (if we’re lucky) and expectations of the sound of chinking ice in a glass of Gin and Tonic, or perhaps a Gin Fizz. A too-fussy gin is often no asset to a gin and tonic: the ideal gin should have balance and a defined and crisp flavour.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: water white and clear with strong and lingering legs

Nose: juniper, orange peel, a hint of spice

Palate: juniper, citrus zest and earthy coriander

Finish: medium and warming

ABV: 37.5%

Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin from ALDI is a comforting spirit with those old-fashioned qualities that have encouraged a G&T revival. The price is outstanding and this bottle beats some of its more celebrated competitors.
