Kikkerland – The Gift of Music

Build Your Own Ukulele with a Kikkerland Kit

ukulele‘I am building my own ukulele,’ I said. They laughed, but only for a moment, and then said ‘You know that instrument is really popular? Started with that song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.’ And plenty of other pieces of current music have the ukulele as part of the ensemble.

The ukulele is like a diminutive guitar. It was introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants from Madeira. It gained great popularity in the rest of the United States during the early 20th century and spread from there. It is now enjoying something of a revival.

But building an instrument does give a bit of inspiration, and especially to youngsters. They can help to construct the ukulele from the simple kit and then they can decorate it. OK, it might be a tapestry of pink fingerprints and a sparkly unicorn, but the kids will also be making memories.

This Kikkerland kit has few parts and will be easy to put together with just a screwdriver and some glue. It could be a delightful family project for those slow days between Christmas and the New Year, and it is truly a gift that will keep on giving. I will be constructing my instrument and posting step-by step images on Instagram. It only has 4 strings so it’s one of the quickest stringed instruments to master.
