Wahaca Serves Up a ‘School Lunch’ For Grown-Ups

England Prepares for a School Food Shake-up.

Wahaca Good Lunch FlyerMexican-inspired restaurant Wahaca is taking the school lunch tray as its inspiration to present a campaign in support of the Chefs in Schools charity.  It’s the Good Lunch!

Created to celebrate the work that the charity does to transform the concept of food in schools and to ensure every child has access to tempting and nutritious meals, the new Good Lunch special is available in Wahaca restaurants across the country.

The Good Lunch is a new limited-edition lunchtime special which takes its inspiration from the all-in-one trays found in school dining rooms. This one is obviously a bit different and will definitely excite everyone who’s young at heart and enjoys good food.  Tacos, chipotle meatballs and guacamole with tortilla chips are all appealing and fun to eat. The lunches are available between 12pm and 4pm at Wahaca until 14th October, at a price of £19.95 per tray.

Diners can choose between guacamole or butter bean and confit garlic dip along with tortilla chips, two tacos with a choice of fillings and Wahaca’s new chipotle meatballs, with a slice of rich chocolate mole cake and cream served alongside.

Transform food culture

For every Good Lunch sold, there will be a 50p donation made to Chefs in Schools, the charity of which Wahaca’s co-founder Thomasina Miers is also co-founder and trustee. They work regularly with schools and their kitchen teams to transform food culture and offer children access to delicious, nutritious meals. Children can be easily put off by the concept of a ‘healthy’ meal. Give them something that is delicious and exciting but don’t tell them it’s good for them! It’s not medicine. It’s an adventure.

Wahaca Good LunchThomasina Miers said: “A great lunch should be something to look forward to, whatever your age and whether you’re at school, at home, at work – or dining out. The Good Lunch is our playful take on the classic school lunch tray, helping to shine a light on something that’s so important – that every child deserves to have good food at school – and that it benefits the whole of society when they do. I’ve seen first-hand the incredible difference that brilliant school food can make, and I’m hugely proud that Wahaca can support the work of Chefs in Schools through this very special new dish.”

School food matters

Nicole Pisani, Chefs in Schools’ Chief Innovation Officer and co-founder said: “Food has the power to change everything – how children feel, how they learn, how they see the world. I’ve spent my career in some of London’s most exciting kitchens, and I can tell you that the most creative, joyful cooking I’ve ever seen is happening in school kitchens up and down this country, with chefs doing extraordinary things on a shoestring. What Wahaca are doing with The Good Lunch is shining a light on that – saying school food matters, it can be delicious, and it deserves to be taken seriously. This is a once in a generation moment and we couldn’t be more grateful to have Wahaca standing alongside us.”

We tried a Good Lunch and it was a treat. Yes, the presentation was a little different from the usual Wahaca plates but it was definitely appealing, and not at all dumbed down for adults. There was the expected quality with vibrant flavours, textures and colours. It’s healthy food, fun to eat and far away from boring and bland. The meatballs were an absolute triumph, being tender with a warming heat. The chocolate cake was exceptional and not to be missed – I need that recipe in my life!

Wahaca never disappoints, but for the next few weeks there’s an opportunity to participate in a good cause as well as enjoying a Good Lunch.
