The Vegan Gardener

Using vegan-organic techniques for a planet-friendly, wildlife-abundant, beautiful
and productive garden.

vegan gardenerIt’s been a strange few years, but these taxing times have offered new opportunities and a chance to ‘reset our lives’. Some of us have taken up painting, others have dusted off long-forgotten musical instruments and many have rediscovered the joys of gardening to grow food and flowers. The Vegan Gardener is a wonderful manual to encourage some fork-to-table adventures.

The author of this well-crafted tome is John Walker, an award-winning gardener who has been an environmental writer for over 40 years. He trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where he was awarded the Kew Diploma in Horticulture. He was features/deputy editor of Garden Answers magazine, and contributing editor of Kitchen Garden magazine. His long-running `Digging Deeper’ column, exploring the connections between gardening and our environment, first appeared in Organic Gardening magazine in 2006. John has made an earth-friendly eco garden in his home in north Wales.

Local, renewable resources

The Vegan Gardener isn’t a cookbook but rather a guide to healthy and sustainable gardening with a focus on ways of co-habiting with wildlife. One can have a productive garden without the use of harmful chemicals. It’s likely the way forward for all of us. We learn how to use local, renewable resources, how to make garden compost and leaf mould, and harness the power of home-grown greenwood chips to inject vibrant life into your soil. Factory-produced fertilisers are becoming much more expensive and harder to find, so anything we can make ourselves is evidently the way forward.

There are over 700 photographs along with detailed gardening plans, and illustrations to guide the novice gardener and to give fresh ideas to the more seasoned enthusiasts. It’s a book for our times and suitable for those with new plots to cultivate as well as those with established gardens.
