Haslemere is a quintessential picturesque market town close to the Surrey borders with Hampshire and Sussex. The Georgian Townhouse is a beautiful historic building in the high street, and it welcomes guests with rooms in which to nestle, and tempting dishes and cocktails.
The location is perfect for a short break. The Georgian Townhouse Haslemere is just the hotel to entice tourists from Central London. Gatwick airport is just 55km away, and Heathrow the same. It is set deep in the Surrey Hills, just off the A3 south of Guildford. The town is thought to date back to the 12th century and was awarded a market charter in 1221.
Those Surrey Hills are famed for their stunning views. The Hills include rolling chalk downs covered in yew and box and are designated as an Area of Natural Beauty. There are leafy winding lanes, charming houses. It’s picture perfect, and wafts one back to gentler times.
The Georgian Townhouse Haslemere is a Grade II listed building which dates from the early 18th century. There is the concession to the 20th century of convenient parking at the back of the hotel.
Intimate corners
The Georgian has been thoughtfully restored to retain hints of the original house but in a style appealing to modern folks with discerning tastes. The ground floor boasts snugs and lounges with fireplaces and intimate corners for relaxing or even working. There is an Accessible Biggy Double Room which is also dog-friendly. The spacious bar joins the airy and striking main restaurant spaces, that are housed in a conservatory with retractable roof. These lead onto an outdoor terrace and garden with plenty of seating.
The 13 bedrooms combine original features with contemporary design and technology. We enjoyed a night in a Comfy Double Room with a king-size bed, en-suite with rain shower and luxury bathroom goods. There was even a fridge with fresh milk, tea, coffee and cookies. The mugs indicated the attention to classy detail displayed throughout the hotel. We did appreciate our Comfy room.
The next morning, we headed for breakfast in the aforementioned restaurant. We ordered a pot of tea – even that was remarkable and mirrored the mugs in our room. My guest chose avocado and two poached eggs, sourdough toast, chilli, lime with dry-cured English bacon. Delicious, substantial and nice presentation.
Kefir Pancakes, bacon, maple syrup, Netherend Farm butter was my breakfast. This was a sweet and savoury winner and another generous portion. The pancakes were fluffy and ideal for soaking up that golden pool of mapley goodness.
High-end, contemporary stay
The Georgian Townhouse Haslemere was an unexpected delight. It could have been a vision of chintzy yesteryear, but it gave a nod to history while providing a lovely, high-end, contemporary stay garnished with comfort, appealing design and good food. It deserves to be popular with locals and visitors alike. The perfect casual, dog-friendly getaway.
