Fatto a Mano Baker Street
Mortadella Summer Pizza.
I am an unashamed lover of a pizza, but it must be well crafted, and Fatto a Mano does that seriously well.
We visited the new Fatto a Mano pizzeria on Baker Street, and it couldn’t be more convenient for transport, being next door to Baker Street Underground and numerous red buses. Most tourists to London would have walked by this generous corner plot on their way to Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum or on the trail to the Sherlock Holmes Museum – he did live in Baker Street after all!
Fatto a Mano is airy and bright with windows on two sides. There is an open kitchen where one can sit up close and watch the theatre of pizza making. We were here to try the Special pizza, and it’s perfect for these unusually hot days when we still crave pizza but a lighter version. It’s where Emilia meets Puglia. It’s different and truly delicious. Don’t miss this one.
Mortadella Bologna
This pizza showcases mortadella. The Emilia-Romagna region’s celebrated cured meat is cooked using a method dating back centuries. The local forests traditionally fed the wild pigs with acorns to create Mortadella Bologna. Puglia’s contribution comes in the unique form of the Burrata cheese.
Thin slices of quality Mortadella Bologna IGP are draped over parmesan cream, charred aubergine pesto, slow-dried tomato, topped with silky Burrata and garnished with fresh oregano leaves. The creation is flavourful and perfect for the weather. The meat might be new to you, but it is famous for a reason!
Instagram-worthy Cocktail
Fatto a Mano Baker Street has its usual full menu of both red and white pizzas along with tempting starter plates. We ordered a brace of cocktails while my guest perused his pizza options. He enjoys classic cocktails, so a G and T was his obvious choice. I wanted something different, something exotic…and Instagram-worthy. My Sarti Rosa Spritz looked great and, more importantly, it was an outstanding cocktail. Sicilian blood orange, mango and passionfruit, spumante, soda, lime and mint combined to create a vision of pink and it’s well worth ordering if you are looking for a fruit-forward libation.
Pancetta, Asparagus and Goat’s Cheese was my companion’s pizza. He pronounced it to be delicious and would order again. That is an accolade from a man who has been eating pizza for 60 years, his first encounter being in Italy and he was hooked. Pizza wasn’t a ‘thing’ in Britain at that time (although it was made mention of in a Dean Martin song!).
It’s all about the crust at Fatto a Mano. It’s always well-textured, perfectly charred, predictably delicious. The topping combinations all work. The staff seem to be as well-chosen as the ingredients, making a visit a warm and friendly experience for all the family.
