Enoch Cruz and Bacchus Wine Bar – Mérida Mexico
Delicious Education and Cozy Charm!
When visiting Mexico, step away from the all-inclusive allure of the likes of Cancun. That, my dear reader, is not real Mexico. Come to Mérida, Yucatan, and when you do, visit Bacchus Wine Bar and appreciate why it has garnered so many 5* reviews. Owner and Sommelier Enoch Cruz is the key to its success and the man who will encourage many happy returns.
Bacchus Wine Bar has the perfect location on Calle 62 between 51 and 53. The corner has a neighbourhood vibe and has become a wine and food ‘destination’ for locals and visitors alike. Its reputation for impeccable service along with its worthy menus has assured its well-deserved accolades from guests who consider it unmissable when visiting this beautiful city.
Enoch Cruz is more than just a friendly host. He is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable educator. He was born in Oaxaca where his family owned a coffee plantation. He moved to Mexico City to continue his studies but returned to his home state. Eventually he moved to Chicago to further a career in the hospitality industry. He knew almost nobody and things were tough – as they always are for new immigrants.
He began his working life employed at a cheesecake factory but moved to positions at various hotels. This man is smart and that quality was recognised by his managers. Enoch was soon offering logistical and practical advice and was able to advance, but continued his professional education and became a qualified wine sommelier, heading many different wine programmes.
Enoch had a dream of owning his own wine bar in Mexico. He was sure he wanted to live in Mérida and luckily, he was able to find the perfect ex-gallery property and opened three years ago. He knew he could create a friendly wine bar with food, offering a high quality of service and an inviting ambience.
He wanted Bacchus Wine Bar to be recognised as a delicious wine experience. An evening here is a warm and unique event. The guest demographic comprises both Mexican and international visitors. Enoch’s fascinating wine list promotes Mexican wine, and each guest is presented with a free wine tasting and an engaging wine tutorial. Bacchus Wine Bar is truly a boutique hospitality hub in Mérida.
There is a food menu of Mediterranean-inspired dishes, and I can recommend the pastas, but don’t miss the charcuterie boards with tangy cheeses and flavourful cured meats – garnished with a pool of delicious local honey. That and a glass or two of Enoch’s suggested red wine, the live music playing in the background and some good conversation, and your evening will be memorable.
Enoch Cruz has made Bacchus Wine Bar in Mérida a success. He has worked for it, but it’s his charming personality and evident passion that shine. He offers hospitality at its finest. I look forward to my next visit.
