No, it’s not a classy little black dress and shimmering costly pearls of the wine world but Sangiovese is a good solid wine. Santodeno Sangiovese Appassimento from Tesco is good value too.

Sangiovese is one of Italy’s most widely grown grape varieties. It pairs well with pasta, rich meats and cheeses and it ages well, so perfect for tucking a few bottles away in your wine cellar or in my case in the hall cupboard under the stairs.

Deep dark ruby hue

Sangiovese is an ancient grape dating back to Roman times. The hand-picked grapes are left in boxes to partially desiccate to allow the sugars to concentrate. The wine has a deep dark ruby hue with rich aromas of jammy fruits. However, this isn’t an overly jammy wine and that is the secret to its food-pairing versatility. There is pleasing acid but soft tannins along with plenty of black berries and ripe plums.

Santodeno Sangiovese Appassimento is the wine of choice for those who are looking for a consistently reliable wine to serve at dinner parties or convivial meals for two. Try this with hearty beef dishes, venison or pasta with a robust slow-cooked ragu sauce. It accompanies a meal over which to linger.

Visit Tesco here

Delicious dinner companion!
