We have enjoyed soba noodles in fancy bowls and have juggled sushi while sitting on tatami mats. Yes, all authentic, but Freak Momma in Parsons Green offers a different but equally authentic taste of Japanese food – and it is just as familiar to those of us who have spent time in Japan, and in Tokyo in particular.

Freak Momma is the new name of the restaurant formerly known as Freak Scene Parsons Green. Created by chef Scott Hallsworth, it presented an edgy take on Japanese and Southeast Asian flavours. Freak Momma continues in that direction.

It’s a small and cozy space but what it lacks in size it makes up for with punchy personality. It reminds me of the small restaurants found in the trendy back streets of Tokyo. There are plastered posters, evocative cushions, great music, but it’s the food and cocktails which will assure return custom.

The menu is built around well-composed small plates and larger comforting dishes. This would be my regular haunt if I lived on that branch of the District Line (which is only a few yards away). The food is great quality, expertly cooked and attractively presented while keeping to the vibrant ethos of those buzzy Tokyo establishments.

Flavours of Japan and Asia

We settled in with a brace of unique cocktails. The drinks here are well-crafted with flavours of Japan and Asia. My Yuzu Margarita Slushie was tangy with citrus and refreshing. The perfect pairing for the food to follow. My guest ordered a tall Tamarind Ricky which was the perfect choice for those loving that distinct sour flavour of tamarind.

My starter was a couple of delicate Salmon Sashimi Tacos. Fried wantons were topped with aromatic truffle, shallots and tossed in the house mayo. These were light and crispy bites with a bit of refined luxury.

Masterstock Pork Ribs with a honey soy ginger glaze were my companion’s starter and they were a generous stack. The ribs were skilfully cut with moist and flavourful meat almost falling from the bones. This should be a signature starter.

My main course was a winner. The Fried Chicken Basket was another substantial spread which included fresh house pickles and dips of spicy mayo and butter-ponzu on the side. The mayo was addictive but that butter-ponzu sauce was good enough to eat with a spoon!

Pork Belly Buns was my guest’s large dish, and it didn’t disappoint. By this time, we knew it wouldn’t. Hoisin barbecue pork belly-filled steamed buns with amazu pickles (amazu is a sweet Japanese vinegar) and peanut soy on the side. It’s another condiment which should be bottled and given to regular diners as Christmas gifts!

Freak Momma in Parsons Green ticked every review box for me. Its casual yet animated contemporary Japanese vibe transported me back to Shinjuku. The food and drink are first class. It should garner local followers for convivial evenings and will likely attract those in the know for Friday and Saturday lunches. We will return, as there are so many more temptations on that menu and it would be delightful to try more cocktails! It was a great experience and one to be repeated.

Opening times

Tues 17.30-22.00
Wed 17.30-22.00
Thurs 17.30-22.00
Fri 12.00-22.30
Sat 12.00-22.30

Freak Momma Parsons Green

28 Parsons Green Lane
London
SW6 4HS

Visit Freak Momma here https://www.freakmommarestaurants.com/

Real Japanese Food.
