These salads combine Italian hospitality and love of good food with cutting-edge technology!

Founded by childhood friends from Milan, Luca and Daniele, Planet Farms was born from a shared passion and unique vision to revolutionise traditional agriculture. It’s called Vertical Framing and it’s about hydroponics: the science of growing plants without using soil. The salad plants are grown in water rich in minerals.

By virtue of the fact the leaves have never been touched or washed, they stay fresh and crispy in the fridge for at least 8 days. No chemical residue, less waste and maximum freshness. The process also offers a new benchmark in sustainable food production with 95% less water used, a 93% reduction in soil occupancy and 96% less fertiliser than in traditional agriculture.

The salad leaves are grown in a vertical frame which maximises the nourishment from light, air, water and minerals, but avoids any stress caused by pesticides, bad weather or chemicals. The result is the most delicious and freshest salad leaves, but with minimal negative environmental impact. This process allows the best quality leaves to be grown in a fraction of the area needed for traditional cultivation, with less water and no pesticides. This must be the future. A UK Planet Farms site is launching in 2026.

Waitrose offers these salads, which include a mix of red and green Italian lettuce leaves with a sweet, moreish flavour, clean and ready to eat, free from pesticides. The whole range of bagged salad leaves is suitable for vegans and healthy for everybody!

Find these salads at Waitrose

Innovation in Waitrose.
