It’s Christmas and time to think of friends and family and wonderful food, and even better if you don’t have to cook it or do the washing up. If that’s your dream, then Pivot Bar and Bistro has you covered.

Pivot occupies a cosy space at the top of a townhouse in Henrietta Street overlooking the Piazza of Covent Garden. It’s an oasis away from the tourist throngs below, and a great spot for lunch or dinner – when Pivot really comes to life!

But we were here to try the Christmas menu, and those dishes didn’t disappoint. Now the bistro is decked with Yuletide greenery and lights and a Christmas tree standing in front of the fireplace. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, just like many of the dishes.

Pivot has some festive libations. The Chai Mulled Wine was well-spiced with classic Christmas flavours and brandy, and it was piping hot, too. Just the way I like it – a beautiful yet simple presentation. Poinsettia was a light and fruity sparkling cocktail of triple sec, prosecco and cranberry juice and garnished with a dehydrated bay leaf. This would be the glass of choice for those craving something light before the generous meal.

Speaks of luxury

Our starters were Christmas comfort foods. Loch Fyne Scottish Smoked Salmon with a garnish of whipped creme fraiche, capers and a spray of vibrant baby watercress for freshness and colour. Yes, this is a standard plate but just right for the festive table. Smoked salmon always speaks of luxury. Chicken Pâté with Cumberland chutney, pickled mushrooms and toasted sourdough was my guest’s first plate. The flavourful pâté was smooth and velvety with enhancing condiments.

Roasted Bronze Turkey with traditional trimmings and a rich cranberry gravy was my main course. It was a delicious expression of the expected Christmas dinner but with a twist. The roast potatoes were replaced with mash. The vegetables were multicoloured jewels. Buttery Mash here is unmissable. So much buttery taste but the potatoes were not oily. I would eat a bowl of this and the only extra I would need would be a spoon.

Lamb Shank Pie with pearl onions, mushrooms, rosemary mash and a red wine jus was my companion’s order, and he pronounced this dramatic creation a winner. Pies evoke memories of home for many British folks; this one was the epitome of old-fashioned good food. It was hot, rich and spectacular with the shank bone protruding through the puff pastry. This should be a Pivot signature dish. Come hungry to enjoy this to the last bite.

Visually delicate

We had a festive feast and honestly didn’t need more, but there is always a little room left for something sweet. Winterberry Pavlova with winterberry compote and salted caramel sauce was unique. It was visually delicate with a sauce which would pair well with almost any dessert.

Christmas Pudding was bound to be part of our Pivot spread. This was rich and traditional and likely just how your mum made. A light brandy cinnamon sauce was the garnish.

Pivot is a favourite restaurant. No, it’s not ‘fine dining’ but the dining is fine. It’s just right. Its location is lovely, but it’s the food and the friendly service which will assure many happy returns.

Visit Pivot Bar and Bistro here

Proper Food.
