It offers a rich tapestry of architecture both past and present.

Illustrator Joel Holland created his first book, NYC Storefronts, because he was missing all the places he couldn’t visit in his own hometown during Covid lockdown. This new book has a focus on London – a city that has evidently offered ample opportunity for artistic inspiration.

London Shopfronts is divided into five geographic sections (Central, North, East, South, and West), and highlights the diversity of culture and character of each. They are brought to life in charming fashion by Joel’s sketches, making this volume a treat for Londoners and a marvellous souvenir for visitors.

Evolution of life here

London-based journalist Rosie Hewitson’s descriptions add context and substance to every illustration. The book is a delightful history lesson and a testament to the evolution of life here, from a humble café to a world-renowned department store.

This collection of more than two hundred shopfronts runs the gamut from old to contemporary London: stately bookshops, umbrella stores, tailors, hatters, and pubs, but also trendy restaurants, bars, and boutiques. A number of places are more deeply profiled, including noteworthy jazz club Ronnie Scott’s; Hatchards, the UK’s oldest- surviving bookshop; Caribbean record store People’s Sound; Rowan’s Tenpin Bowling Alley, and popular Turkish restaurant Mangal II.

London Shopfronts
Author: Joel Holland (Author/ Illustrator) and Rosie Hewitson
Published by: Prestel
Price: £19.99
ISBN-13: 978-3791389158

Illustrations of the City’s Best-Loved Spots.
