An early mention confirms that, in 1551, the family already had equipment to produce wine in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, the town that Codorníu calls home. In 1659 the Codorníu and Raventós families, the main wine makers, were joined by marriage. It was in 1872 that Josep Raventós became the first man to produce a bottle of sparkling wine by using traditional methods and combining the local varietals from the Penedès region of Spain.

The same way Champagne is made

Codorniu Non-Vintage Cava Brut is made using the traditional trio of cava grape varieties: Macabeo, Xarel-lo and Parellada. Xarel-lo is a white grape grown in Catalonia. It is a cross between Brustiano faux and ‘Gibi’, a synonym for the Spanish Hebén grape. The Macabeo and Parellada grapes are mainly used to make mildly acidic and fresh white wines to be enjoyed young, or to blend with other varieties as in this case.

A fresh, crisp and elegant sparkling wine with light and summery flavours of citrus and apple, with fine and pleasingly enduring bubbles. An ideal good value sparking wine to enjoy well-chilled or made into simple cocktails. It’s delightful when partnered with just a teaspoon of lychee liqueur in each glass with a garnish of a pink blossom. I call this a Canton Cava.

Learn more about Codorniu wines here

For East-West Summer Cocktails.
