In the 19th century, the buildings were adapted to become a penal colony run by the clergy for the education of wayward young people. Some may have been criminals, but others were sent there by their parents.

The cellar of Montlobre was designed by one of Ledoux’s students, a famous architect of Louis XV. The aesthetic style is characterised by the pillars supporting the roof of La Chapelle. Most of the buildings had not been used for about a century, but during the 2000s they were renovated to restore their original charm. The Estate is now a celebrated winery.

Montlobre Septem Quercus 2018 is a delight. It’s a wine that will improve still further by being laid down for a few years. The label is appealing with a vellum texture and stained-glass window graphic. It raises the expectation of a quality wine soon to be enjoyed.

Notes:

14%ABV

Grapes: merlot and cabernet sauvignon
Appearance: rich red purple
Nose: blackberry, red fruit
Palate: heavy with luscious fruit and balanced tannins with a hint of barrel aging
Finish: Long and mouth-filling

Septem Quercus 2018 is an exceptional wine for its price. It makes a superb pairing with red meats, but also enjoy a glass with just a little cheese and a plate of cured ham. The ideal wine to buy for one’s cellar.

Visit the Montlobre Estate here

Septem Quercus to keep Montlobre Estate is over 300 years old and steeped in history.
